Passings: Robert A. Hund, Dr. Donald H. Slocum PDF Print E-mail

Robert A. Hund, 80, former managing director of the Marble Institute of America (MIA), in Farmington, Mich., of cancer on March 16. He headed the MIA from 1980-1995, growing the membership to more than 600, and also represented other trade organizations and commercial clients through his firm, Robert Hund Incorporated (RHI), from 1967-2006.
Hund’s early career centered on music and broadcasting, including work as program director of American Expeditionary Force radio in Rome immediately following World War II, and as an on-air singer in early television in Detroit, Cincinnati and New York. Known as “The Baritone,” he held a B.S. in Music Education from Wayne State University, and performed throughout his life with groups such as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Chorus. He also sang the national anthem at several opening days for the Detroit Tigers.
Dr. Donald H. Slocum, biochemist and solid-surface innovator, on Feb. 28. Dr. Slocum’s work with DuPont in the 1960s led to the invention of Corian®, the company’s premier solid-surface line. He worked in executive positions with several companies, retiring as senior vice president of technology for Masonite.
He also held a lifelong passion for baseball and softball, playing on the gold-medal-winning 1997 Senior Olympics baseball team and on the New Jersey Embers senior softball team that took three consecutive silver medals in national competition.
He also served in the U.S. Army with the 194th Engineer Combat Battalion in the Korean War, and retired from active/reserve service as a colonel after 30 years. He was interred at Arlington National Cemetery on April 10.
