BOWIE, Md. – A group of talented newcomers to the trowel trades won notice late last month during competitions at the International Masonry Institute (IMI).
Eight workers entering the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) earned top honors at the BAC/IMI International Apprentice Contest, held Sept. 28-29 at the BAC/IMI John J. Flynn International Training Center in Bowie.
A total of 103 contestants competed in eight craft categories. BAC apprentices receive their training through union local training programs and the IMI. The contestants, mostly from a series of local and regional contests, came from 20 states and five Canadian provinces.
“These winners represent levels of skill that are truly extraordinary,” says BAC President and IMI Co-Chair Flynn. “It’s a testament to their dedication to their craft, and to the Union industry’s commitment to quality training.”

BAC represents 100,000 skilled masonry-trowel-trades craftworkers in the United States and Canada. IMI is a joint labor-management cooperative program of BAC and the contractors who employ its members. Its core programs are quality craft training and technical assistance to the design and building communities. |
