In the classic half-empty, half-full debate, does a decline in CNC production-center offerings represent a retrenchment in the U.S. market, or a refinement of products?
Keen observers of the annual listing of CNC machines in Stone Business will notice a few less products (and manufacturers) at the end of 2008. And, admittedly in the current economic climate, people aren’t exactly busting down doors to buy units selling for up to – and beyond – $500,000.
Some manufacturers didn’t make this year’s list as U.S. agents stopped representing some foreign-made lines. And one domestic manufacturer – Matrix Stone Products – succumbed to the economic downturn when it closed its doors in mid-November.
Not all the news is dire, however. Several manufacturers added new models, and one U.S.-made sink-cutout model – the Brevia – debuted at this year’s StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas under the representation of Salem Stone.
The Stone Business annual CNC survey tries to answer some top-line questions about CNC models. As with every survey we offer, it won’t give the full picture on every machine; it’s meant to give you some awareness of all that’s offered now.
Information includes the machine’s production area and the number of axes the machine can use to work a piece of stone. All handle three axes, but some can do more than the standard Z-axis up-and-down for angular movement.
Worktable dimensions show the surface area that can hold a piece of stone; where possible, there’s also the maximum weight supported by the worktable. Spindle specifications show the speed and power of the drive units.
Models can change, and prices of European-made machines can vary with the exchange rate between U.S. dollars and the euro. For the latest information – and before making any purchase commitment – always contact manufacturers or the U.S. agents/distributors.
