Demand may be less than in previous years, but that doesn’t stop manufacturers from offering more models to fit any particular need in the business. When Stone Business took a look at bridge saws in August 2007, the selection ran to 118 models. This year, it’s topping 120.
The slight move up comes as several companies aren’t offering bridge saws this year. For some, it’s a change in direction as they solidify efforts in, for example, CNC machines. Others quit rebadging equipment made by another manufacturer. And at least one company – Sommer & Maca – found itself bought out by two different firms (C.R. Laurence Co., GranQuartz LLC) and ending its Somaca-branded machinery sales.
The slight growth in bridge-saw selection is, once again, also fed by development of hybrid machines. In addition to the standard job of slicing up slabs, more machines are including CNC programming and the ability to add milling tools. And several models are advancing the combination of blade work with an abrasive-waterjet cutting head.
As with previous surveys of the bridge-saw field, not all the listed machines fit the tight classification of a gantry-based saw mounted on two supports. Some are self-contained (monobloc) machines, while others need large concrete abutments for proper installation.
The listed saws cut mechanically, instead of having a worker move the cutting head across stone (as is done with manual production centers). All handle a slab-sized piece of stone, and – with few exceptions – the equipment is available (or soon will be sold) through some kind of North American sales channel. The result is our current saw lineup, with machines either made in North America, imported by a U.S. agent, or under negotiations to be represented in the U.S. and Canada.
Stone-equipment importing and distribution remains dynamic – probably more now than ever – with changes in distributor agreements..It’s a standard statement we make for every machine survey, but it’s important when you select a saw.
Invariablly, there’s a saw or two that’s available that didn’t make our list (and we’ll keep looking). Some models are very close to production but aren’t officially released, and we’ve noted that in a few listings.
Models change and prices vary, and the exchange rate between U.S. dollars and the Euro can also have an effect on whether a model can compete in the North American market. For the latest information – and before making any purchase commitment – always contact manufacturers and/or the U.S. agents/distributors.
